About the Event
Prism Percussion focuses on performing works by notable and emerging artists from underrepresented communities including women, LGBTQIA+, and BIPOC composers. The duo also aims to perform works for standard and nonstandard instruments. Prism Percussion’s recital will showcase the wide palette of sounds attainable with the use of battery, keyboard, and found instruments. Each piece provides a variety of colors, textures, and timbres demonstrating the versatility of percussion instruments. The recital will culminate with several pieces commissioned by the duo. The Blacker the Berry by Steph Davis (they/them) speaks to how colorism draws a parallel between darker skin and masculinity, and how that might affect darker-skinned folks' relationship with gender and expression. The recital’s finale, Transit, a virtuosic trio scored for mallet percussion duo and keyboard, will feature award-winning composer and pianist, Nicholas Pavkovic. Prism Percussion is honored to share the stage with their dear friend and mentor, Pavkovic, performing their first commission as a duo.
